Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons – “Laura”

Pairs Well With…Ryan Bingham, Band of Horses, Lucero

The dreamy opening melodies of “This Is How It Goes” that kicks off Chisel’s latest LP Old Believers are unfortunately a bit of a red herring as the record sticks mostly to the solid, alt country style Chisel and his band have been branding for the better part of decade.  Nonetheless, the songwriting and musicianship is consistently strong and honest throughout the whole of the record.

2012 Review: Solid and reliable, Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons are like a sturdy pair of work boots.  They play pop-leaning alt country that definitely has a wooded winter sound that derives from their home state of Wisconsin.  The best part about Chisel is how he embeds simple pop melodies into a traditional sound.   Granted, Chisel has plenty of soft, acoustic strummers throughout his catalog, but his bread and butter comes from the more upbeat material.  No matter what angle he’s approaching a song from, Chisel adds a sense of maturity through his vocals and songwriting ability.  Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons will be stopping through Austin in support of new material to follow up to their 2010 major label debut Death Won’t Send a Letter.

I COULD WRITE A TERRIBLE CONTEMPORARY ADULT EROTIC FICTION NOVEL IN THE TIME IT TAKES FOR THIS NAIL POLISH TO DRY.
NOT WITH WET NAILS, OBVIOUSLY, BUT YOU GET WHAT I’M SAYING.
